15 (Actually Good) Dog Friendly Fall Activities

Fall is hands-down my favorite time of year. Cliche? Maybe…but I think it’s the perfect time to enjoy outdoor adventures with your pup. Every year I create an autumn bucket list and like to include as many dog friendly fall activities as I can.

Once I started writing, I was actually surprised at how many fun activities I have done with my pups over the years during this season. I hope you gather inspiration and try out some of these ideas and make memories with your own dog.

15 (Actually Good) Dog Friendly Fall Activities

1. Go on a Fall Hike with your Dog

Taking your dog on a fall hike can be one of the most enjoyable dog-friendly fall activities. The weather is cooler, the leaves are changing, and it’s the perfect time to get outside. Whether you are an experienced hiker or just looking for a relaxing stroll, there’s a trail out there that both you and your dog will love.

I love using the website AllTrails to check out the best hikes and trails in my local area. Just put in your town in the search bar and all the local trails will pop up.

2. Visit a Dog-Friendly Pumpkin Patch

I absolutely love visiting pumpkin patches during the fall. I have to admit, I have not taken my dogs to one yet but I have a dog-friendly patch near my town that I plan on taking my dogs to this season.

Finding the Perfect Pumpkin Patch

Not all pumpkin patches welcome dogs, so make sure to do a little research beforehand. You can check their websites or give them a call.

If you are not familiar with the pumpkin patches in your area, try this website which lists all popular pumpkin patches by state. Make sure to call the pumpkin patch to make sure they are dog-friendly before you make the trip.

3. Have a Fall Photoshoot

If you’re one who loves taking cute pictures of your dog, fall offers a stunning natural backdrop for your pup’s photoshoot. The golden leaves, crisp air, and soft autumn light create ideal conditions for the cutest of photos. Plus, you’ll have those memories and pictures as a perfect keepsake year after year.

4. Go Camping

Camping in the fall with your dog can be a really fun experience. The air is crisp and cool, nature’s colors are golden and vibrant and if you’re an outdoorsy person, camping can be a great activity that you and your dog can do together.

Finding the Perfect Campsite

Selecting the right camping spot is crucial for a good time. Many campsites welcome dogs, but make sure to confirm the details first.

  • National and State Parks: Check their websites for dog-friendly spots. Some parks have specific areas where dogs are allowed.
  • Private Campgrounds: Many of these cater specifically to pet owners. They may offer amenities like dog parks or designated dog areas.
  • Hiking and Camping Apps: Use apps to find reviews from other dog owners. They can offer insights into the best spots and what to expect.

5. Baking Fall Dog Treats at Home

Baking dog treats is something I do on the regular in my household. I love creating new dog treat recipes depending on the season or time of year. Fall is a great time to try some apple or pumpkin flavored dog treats. The best part about making your own treats at home is you know what actually goes in them. You can feel good about giving your dog a treat that is not full of artificial preservatives.

Below is a list of homemade dog treat recipes on my blog that are all fall-themed. Try one of these recipes out for your pups and tag me @thedogdarling if you happen to be on Instagram.

6. Visit a Dog-Friendly Apple Orchard

Autumn and apple orchards go hand-in-hand, but did you know many orchards welcome dogs? A trip to a dog-friendly apple orchard is a fantastic fall activity that lets both you and your dog enjoy the outdoors. My childhood dog absolutely loved apples and would eat them when they fell off my family’s backyard apple tree. I think visiting an orchard with your pup would be so fun (especially if your dog loves apples).

Finding a Dog-Friendly Apple Orchard

  1. Online Searches: Look up local apple orchards and check their websites or social media pages.
  2. Word of Mouth: Ask friends or your fellow dog owners for suggestions.
  3. Local Listings: Websites and apps like Yelp or Google Reviews often include pet-friendly ratings.

7. Go to a Drive-In Movie with Your Dog

Last September, I went to the local drive-in movie theater and was surprised to see how many families had their dogs with them in their cars. I thought it was a great way to include your dog and get out of the house. You can enjoy the movie, and they can snuggle up and take a nap.

Selecting the Perfect Drive-In

Not all drive-in theaters welcome dogs, so a little preparation is key. Here’s how to find the best spot:

  • Online Research: Start by searching for dog-friendly drive-ins in your area. Many theaters post their pet policies on their websites.
  • Call Ahead: A quick phone call can confirm if pets are allowed and what rules are in place.
  • Social Media and Reviews: Platforms like Facebook and Yelp can provide recent visitor experiences and photos, offering insights on how pet-friendly a venue is.

8. Attending a Dog Halloween Event in Your Town

Halloween isn’t just for kids! Many communities are catching on to the fun, hosting dog-centric Halloween events that your pup will love. Many dog parks and cities host dog costume contests or trick-or-treat trails that are fun to take your dog to if they enjoy being around other people/dogs.

Finding Local Dog Halloween Events

Your town might have more dog-friendly Halloween events than you think. Here are some ways to discover them:

  • Community Boards: Check local community centers, vet offices, or pet stores for flyers and posters.
  • Social Media Groups: Join local dog owners’ groups on Facebook or Instagram where events are often shared.
  • Local Newspapers and Websites: Many towns have event listings in local publications or on community websites.

9. Have a Bonfire with Your Dog

Nothing says fall quite like a bonfire under the stars. The crackling of flames, the scent of burning wood, and the cozy warmth make bonfires perfect for chilly autumn nights. Turn on some great music and let your pup be a part if this classic fall activity. Here’s how to make it safe and fun for both of you.

Setting Up a Safe Bonfire

Before you start, safety is key. Choose a spot that keeps your dog away from direct flames but still lets them enjoy the warmth. Here are some quick tips:

  • Location: Set up your bonfire in a controlled area, away from flammable objects and preferably in a fire pit. Make sure it’s an area where your dog can comfortably stay a safe distance from the fire.
  • Boundaries: Use a safety gate or some form of boundary to keep your dog from getting too close to the flames.
  • Fire Size: Keep the bonfire small to avoid high flames that can be dangerous for you and your dog.

10. Take a Scenic Fall Drive with Your Pup

One of the best ways to enjoy the fall colors is to take a scenic drive. And who better to share this adventure with than your dog? If your dog loves road trips, plan a little venture out to an area you know will be gorgeous during this time of the year.

Planning Your Route

Choosing the right route can make all the difference. Look for areas known for their stunning fall foliage and dog-friendly spots where you can stop along the way.

  • State Parks and Nature Reserves: These often have beautiful drives and rest areas where dogs are welcome.
  • Scenic Byways: Many states have official scenic byways that showcase the best fall colors.
  • Online Resources: Check travel blogs or local tourism sites for recommended routes that are pet-friendly.

11. Visit a Dog-Friendly Winery

If you’re looking for more dog friendly fall activities and you’re also a wine lover, a winery visit should be on your list this fall. Many local wineries are dog-friendly on their patio areas but always make sure to call or look up their pet policies before making the trip. My town’s local winery allows leashed dogs on the patio and has live music every weekend during the fall time. See if there is something like that in your local area.

Finding a Dog-Friendly Winery

Start by researching which wineries welcome dogs. Not all wineries are dog-friendly, so it’s important to check this beforehand:

  • Online Listings: Websites like Yelp or TripAdvisor often have sections for dog-friendly establishments.
  • Winery Websites: Visit the winery’s official website and look for pet policies.
  • Local Recommendations: Ask other dog owners or check with your vet for their favorite spots.

12. Pack a Picnic in the Park

Packing a picnic is a fun and simple activity you can do if you plan to take a nice walk in a park. Pack something for you and them! Make sure to bring a blanket for you to sit on and enjoy the fall views.

13. Go to a Farmer’s Market

Fall brings a bounty of fresh harvests, so farmer’s markets are pretty popular during this time of year. It’s pretty common for Farmer’s Markets to be dog-friendly but again, just make sure before you take your pup with you.

14. Have a Cozy Night In with Your Dog

When you think of dog friendly fall activities, your mind probably goes to the outdoors. However, sometimes, the best moments are the cozy ones spent indoors. As the weather cools down, there’s nothing quite like curling up at home with your dog. Grab your favorite book, blanket, and a hot beverage and enjoy the cozy vibes with your pup.
