Fall in Love with These Pumpkin Carob Dog Treats

Ever since discovering carob, I’ve been experimenting with various treats using this dog-safe ingredient. My dogs seem to love it, so I decided to combine it with one of my favorite fall flavors—pumpkin. Inspired by chocolate chip pumpkin muffins (which dogs obviously can’t have), I substituted chocolate with carob to create these delightful pumpkin carob dog treats. My dogs absolutely loved them, so I’m excited to share the recipe with you.

What is Carob?

Carob is a dog-safe alternative to chocolate, made from carob tree pods. It has a sweet, chocolate-like flavor but lacks harmful compounds like caffeine and theobromine. Rich in vitamins and minerals, carob is a nutritious ingredient often used in dog treats.

  • Refrigerate dough for 20 minutes to firm up. This will make it much easier to work with in the later steps.
  • On a floured surface, use a rolling pin to roll to 1/4 inch thickness.
  • Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes. I used a paw print but feel free to use whatever shape you have on hand.

  • Place treats on a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
  • Let them cool completely on a wire rack before icing. If you are not adding icing, you are done once your treats are cool!

Optional Carob Icing

Adding some carob icing is a nice little touch to these treats. If you have never worked with cornstarch and water, the consistency can be a bit tricky. It is almost a liquid and a solid at the same time (you’ll understand once you see the consistency).

  • Mix 1/4 cup cornstarch with 1 tablespoon carob powder.
  • Add water as needed (start with drops at a time until it becomes a liquid consistency).
  • Use a piping or ziplock bag to decorate cooled treats with this icing. The icing does harden after about 10 minutes.
