Who doesn’t love the smell of warm apple pie, especially during the fall season? Inspired by this classic treat, I decided it was time to make a special apple-themed treat for my pups (and yours too). My dogs typically love homemade treats, but my dog, Lacy, who’s much pickier than my other pup, Maverick, is my ultimate taste tester.

Fortunately, these homemade apple pie dog treats passed with flying colors. They’re not only delicious but are also packed with dog-friendly ingredients. Get ready to spoil your dogs with these easy fall-inspire dog treats.

Can Dogs Eat Apple Pie?

No. Dogs shouldn’t eat apple pie. While apples are safe for dogs, apple pie contains sugar, spices, and sometimes xylitol, which can be harmful. Nutmeg, often used in apple pie, is also toxic to dogs. That’s why these little apple treats are great, because they don’t contain any of the harmful ingredients that are in regular apple pie.

Ingredients for Homemade Apple Pie Dog Treats

To whip up a batch of these delicious apple pie dog treats, you’ll need only a few simple ingredients. Keep in mind that all of them are dog-friendly and ensure your pup gets a healthy snack.

  • 2 1/2 cups of oat flour: This is a great alternative to wheat flour, especially if your dog has a gluten sensitivity.
  • 2 eggs: Eggs are packed with protein and help bind the ingredients together.
  • 1 cup finely chopped apples: Apples add natural sweetness and fiber. Be sure to remove the seeds and core.
  • 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt: This adds creaminess and is good for digestion.
  • Cornstarch (optional for icing): If you want to get fancy, you can use this in an icing drizzle.
  • Pinch of cinnamon (optional): A little cinnamon adds flavor and has antioxidant properties. Use sparingly.

Optional Icing Ingredients

If you really want to spoil your pup, consider adding a simple icing to your homemade apple pie dog treats. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch: This is the base for the icing.
  • Water (as needed): Add just enough to reach your desired icing consistency.

Materials Needed

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Spatula/whisk
  • Spoon
  • Measuring cups

Step-by-Step Instructions

Rolled out apple pie dog treat dough. There are imprints of bone-shaped cookies in the dough.
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the oat flour, eggs, and Greek yogurt.
  3. Use a spatula or whisk to mix them together until smooth. Once your mixture is well-combined, fold in the finely chopped apples. Make sure the apples are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
  4. Place the dough in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. Chilling makes the dough easier to handle and less sticky, which is especially helpful when rolling and cutting it out.
  5. Once the dough is chilled, roll it out on a flat, floured surface using a rolling pin. Aim for a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Next, use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out the treats.
  6. Place the cut-out treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Be sure to leave a little space between each treat to ensure even baking.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Keep an eye on them to avoid over-browning.
  8. Once the treats are baked to perfection, remove them from the oven and let them cool on a cookie rack. Make sure they’re completely cool before offering one to your dog.

Adding Icing (Optional)

If you want to add a special touch, you can ice the treats.

  1. In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with just enough water to achieve a drizzling consistency. Use a spoon to drizzle the icing over the cooled treats.
  2. For a bit of extra flavor and a festive look, sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on top.
