The irresistible aroma of waffles sizzling in the morning—it’s a small and simple joy that makes waking up a tad easier. It got me thinking, why should our dogs miss out on this delight? Simple Dog Waffle Recipe

Ingredients Needed:

  • 1 cup of oat flour
  • 1 egg (provides protein and helps bind the batter)
  • 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce (adds natural sweetness and moisture)
  • 1/4 cup of unsalted chicken broth (enhances the flavor and adds moisture)

Materials Needed:

  • Waffle maker. I used this mini waffle iron (to cook the waffles)
  • Measuring cup (for accurately measuring ingredients)
  • Mixing bowl  (large or medium bowl)
  • Whisk or wooden spatula (for mixing the batter)

Instructions:

  1. Begin by preheating your waffle iron according to its manufacturer’s instructions. This ensures it’s ready to go once your waffle batter is mixed.
  2. In your large bowl, add 1 cup of oat flour. Oat flour is a healthy, gluten-free alternative that’s a little more gentle on your dog’s stomach than the all-purpose flour often used to make human waffles.
  3. Crack 1 egg into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Then, add 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce and 1/4 cup of unsalted chicken broth to the mix. These ingredients add moisture, flavor, and binding to the batter.
  4.  Using your whisk or wooden spatula, mix all the ingredients together until you achieve a smooth, uniform wet mixture. Be sure to mix well to ensure there are no dry pockets of flour remaining.dog waffle batter in a measuring cup
  5. If necessary, lightly coat the surface of your waffle iron with a little bit of coconut oil prevent the waffles from sticking.
  6. Pour enough batter into the center of the preheated waffle iron to evenly cover the waffle grid. Close the lid and cook according to your waffle iron’s instructions, or until the waffle is a nice golden brown. This usually takes about 3-5 minutes, depending on your iron. Side note– to make small waffles, add a tablespoon of batter at a time onto your waffle iron. These will need to cook for a much shorter amount of time due to the smaller portion. Check after 1 minute.
  7. Once cooked, carefully remove the waffle from the iron (use a wooden spatula) and allow it to cool completely. This is important to ensure it’s safe for your dog to eat and to prevent any potential burns. The homemade waffles will have more of a cake-like consistency than regular waffles.
  8. Break the cooled waffle into appropriately sized pieces for your dog. Remember, treats should only make up a small portion of your dog’s diet. Personally, I thought the entire waffle was a bit much so I split it between my two pups.

Serving Size: This recipe makes about 2 regular sized waffles. I did have some extra batter left over.

Adjusted Ingredient for Grain Allergies:

Coconut Flour: If your dog has a grain allergy, you can substitute coconut flour for the oat flour in the recipe. However, coconut flour is highly absorbent, so you may need to adjust the liquid ingredients accordingly.

It’s generally recommended to use less coconut flour or increase the liquid ingredients when substituting for other flours. Start with 1/3 to 1/2 cup of coconut flour in place of the 1 cup of oat flour, since it absorbs much more moisture. Monitor the batter’s consistency and adjust with a bit more liquid if too dry.
